Peer Response: Teaching Specific revision Suggestions
Gloria A. Neubert and Sally J. McNelis, Peer Response: “Teaching Specific revision Suggestions.” The English Journal Vol. 79, No.5 (Sep. 1990), pp. 55-56.
Summary:
Gloria A. Neubert and Sally J. McNelis briefly stated in this article about the meaning of what Peer Response is about, Peer Response is known as the way we should give a response on a writers paper as well as the different conflicts that students have with their peers writings, because they do not know how to make a clear response. Students concluded that their reason about them not having a helpful response is because they believe that the writers have a weakness with their writing so it makes the reader and have a straight answer. “How can we teach middle-school students to give focused and specific response to their peers during collaborative writing response groups?” Was a question that was studied by Gloria A. Neubert and Sally J. McNelis for a whole year because of the problems occurring with writing. PQP was known as the answer of helping student’s understand and focus in the responses as well as revision they had to accomplish, PQP is a group of students organized to read aloud and understand Each other in a better way, it helps out the students as well as the writer to identify the possible changes throughout the whole writing. Total Class Activity, Small-Group Activity, Individual Work an Follow-up are the different groups that are known as to help the students with Specific Responses so that they can get a better understanding with the writers point of view.
Question: Why is it important to have Praise-Question-Polish and what is the meaning of it?
Response: PQP is what it’s called Praise-Questin-Polish, PQP was found as a technique as well as a guide to help students improve their way of thinking for example to always have a positive attitude with the critique process as well as to always focus on their task. Its an important role to the students because what PQP brings to the members are helpful resources so that they can get a better understanding with a writers writing. PQP requires a group of members to be joined together so they can all read together and take turns in reading aloud while the other member that are in the group are following along the reader with a copy that is issued out to them all. This technique helps the reader understand and find the most important details of the writer’s point of view, as well as the emotions the writer is trying to express on his writing. Therefore, the responders get a better picture, imagination and attitude to comment on the writers PQP form. The responder is in charge of giving the writers their own opinion and thoughts about what they have read, which that is how they all start to discuss about the writing of each other. When the members of the group are all finished with their discussion over what they have heard and read they make sure that the writer is given the PQP so he/she can start with the revision. So what the writer does is goes back and starts making corrections depending on the errors that were pointed out by the peers were. Writers make all kinds of mistakes so I highly believe that PQP is a great and important technique, for the fact that in has shown improvement with students writing and responses even though sometimes it takes time for some students but sooner or later they start getting the hang of it.
i really like your response you had about the PQP technique, it was well answered and very detailed
