Revision strategies of student writers and experienced adult writers
Nancy Sommers; College Composition and Communication, Vol. 31, No. 4 (Dec., 1980), pp. 378-388
Summary:
Linear models are separated into discrete stages. Gordon Rohmans suggested that the composing
process moves from prewriting to writing to rewriting. James Briton model are described in
metaphors of linear growth, conception-incubation-production .Rohman said a writer is a man
who puts his experiences into words. Britton theory is based on expressiveness of speech.
Revision is separated I stage at the end of the process. Linear models in speech are irreversible.
Edward Corbet models where very similar to Brittons models. The study done in Oklahoma
university with college students and experienced writers shows that it takes tame for a writer to
revise and wright a good composition. College students did not correct content they just correct
grammar and spelling experience writers do that too but they also correct content. Kids in
schools are taught to fix grammar, spelling and to change low level words to high level words.
Experience writers rewrite there essay multiple times And when they make changes they make
them to keep the reader interested for example They shorten the topic, make there argument
more affective… ETC.

QUESTION:
What are the revision strategies of experienced writers found in Sommer’s studies? What can you learn from those strategies?

Experienced writer’s like to write all their ideas down on paper and edit as they write. Some
writer cross out whole paragraphs when there writing. Experienced writers have many drafts.
When rewriting they try to shape the argument to make it more affective. They rewrite forever.
Experienced writers like taking there time revising because its easier to change something over
time. Experienced writer constantly chiseling and changing as they revise. I have learn that I am
a very inexperience writer and I don’t see myself becoming a experienced writer because to me
the way they write is very close to perfection and that takes a lot of time and I don’t have the
patience for it, but I did teach me that fixing vocabulary and grammar is not enough I must fix
the content as well.
