SQR 1

Anne, a writing teacher from New York University, tries to focus on her assignment that her and twenty teachers including her had to do by composing aloud on a recording tape. Sondra Peral reviews the tape and notices that there is a pattern occurring in the composing. This leads to unanswered questions about the research, about how writers subroutine or how there is a backward-moving action. There are three recurring features; when people reread after every sentence, phrase, or after some sort of information has been written; the writer provides a key word and continues to go back to the key word to get back on topic or just simply when they get stuck during their writing. The third recurring is felt sense where the writer provides emotions repeatedly without really being noticed. Peral also talks about retrospective structuring, when the writer feels that something is missing in their writing and brings what is there, using language in structured form. Last, she talks about how many writers write about what readers might want them to write about and not what the writer wants to write about, this is an example of projective structuring.

Explain “felt sense” in your own words. How do you relate the description of “felt sense” in the reading to your own experience? Can you describe your “felt sense” when it comes to writing?
“Felt sense” is a recursive process, in other words, it is when the author includes their emotions in the writing and is repetitive. They may use “key words” throughout the writing by expressing their feelings. “Felt sense” may be easy to spot or may not be easy to spot during the reading. I can relate to “felt sense” from the reading in a matter that every time I write I always express my feelings repetitively. I usually do not use “key words” in my writing but I do put out my emotions and tend to repeat them. When I’m stressed out about something and I cannot seem to put myself together I tend to just write about what is going on in my life at the time. “Felt sense” would end up being like a stress reliever to me just by writing down every emotion that I’m feeling. My “felt sense” to me is very expressive; I do not ever leave out a certain emotion I may be feeling at that particular moment. I always write down exactly how I’m feeling and what I’m thinking. I tend to write what’s really inside and somehow connect it to the topic.
