Gloria A. Neubert and Sally J. McNeils. “Peer Response: Teaching Specific Revision Suggestions”. The English Journal, Vol. 79, No 5(Sep., 1990) pp. 52-56

Summary

In this article Gloria A. Neubert and Sally J. McNeils are explaining how when we have to give a feedback in our peers’ drafts, it is really uncommon to give an accurate opinion or comment. Most of the time our comments are vague and they really don’t help to the writer to improve their writing.

In order to provide a successful feedback there is a technique called PQP in other words is making suggestions about what needs to improve, be changed and what is good about it.

This technique usually works with groups of 2-5 students, one would be reading out loud, and the rest of the team would be following and making some notes.

Analyzing this technique, they found that still those comments did helped, but as they listened the audiotapes some PQP responses were not as good as they thought, so they classified the comments as Vague (19%), General but Useful (53%), and Specific(28%). The Vague comments are those that are not really specific and don’t provide that much of information; the General but Useful give a useful direction, but still they are not as they should be and; the Specific provide a completely direction to where to go.

Question & Response:

Q.- Why is it important to have Praise, Question, and Polish parts?

Praise, question and polish is a technique that helps us improve our writing, as seen from the reader's perspective. It does help us to focus and maintain a good attitude towards the critique.

For example when I am writing, I get the feeling that something is missing in my paper, so it is really helps me, that someone else that has more experience reread my paper and point the areas that need to be improved but also tell me, what is not making sense at all.

Knowing what is good, what has to be reinforced, and what you really need to focus on, helps a lot, because it is been read from another perspective, the most important one in this area, the reader and he/she will totally tell what changes need to be done.
