Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers

Summary

This article talks about how the current models of writing process have directed attention away from revision. These modesl are knmow as linear models and they separated the writing process into stages. Two representative models are Gordon Rohman's, which is that the composing process moves from prewriting to writing to rewriting. Then there is James Britton's model, which the writing process is a series of stages described in metaphors of linear growth. The linear model bases itself on speech as well in two specefic ways. First of, it's based on traditional rhetorical models, models that were created to serve the spoken art of oratory. Linear models produce a parody of writing then isolating revision, and disregarding it plays havoc with the experienced teachers have of the actual writing. Another thing this article talks about is how student writers do not really revise their writing. The main thing they look for in their vocabulary or taking out thoughts and ideas. When it comes to experienced writer, they mostly change their whole concept of their writing and they come up with new ideas and thoughts to use in their new concepts. So when it comes to student writing and experienced writing, there are different models, strategies, and stages used for each writer.

Question:

Why can't writing be compared to speech?

Response:

Writing can not be compared to speech because in writing you get to reread and see your mistakes. Once you see your mistakes you get to fix them, and you can even take out what you don't like from your writing. Now on the other hand, when it comes to speech, you can't take back what you have already said. If you think twice about what you have said and you try to take it back, it is called a second thought. With the second thought you would have to go back and explain to the person what you meant. So that is why writing can not be compared to speech.
