Peer Response: Teaching Specific Revision Suggestion

Summary:

Gloria A. Neubert and Sally J. McNelis. "Peer Response: Teaching Specific Revision Suggestions". The English Journal, Vol. 79, No. 5 (Sep., 1990), pp.52-56

Peer response is all about getting comments from your peers on your writing to make it better. There is even an organizational technique we use for our peer response. This technique is called PQP which stands for "Praise", "Question", and "Polish". When using praise you comment what is good about the writing, what should not be changed, and why what the person wrote is good. Question is when you ask questions about what you do not understand as a reader. For polish you give suggestions to the writer for improvement they can make on their writing. When using PQP responses there are three categories used to classify what kind of comment it is. There is "Vague" which means the comment is full of generalities or provides little or no specific direction for revision. Then there is "General but Useful" which means the comments are still too general but provides some direction for revision. Finally there is "Specific" which means the comments provide the writer specific direction for revision. People use PQP to sort of grade your writing with the comments they give you. So once you get those comments you see what you did wrong or where you need help. Then you revise your writing and the ending product of your writing should be better the second time around. Its a lot of process for this technique but it helps you peers write better. Even yourself , because use this technique for you writing. So all in all peer response is a good strategy to use when anyone needs the help to write a good paper.

Question:
Why "peer response"? What can peers' comments do for ones writing?

Response:
I'll tell you why peer response, its because different readers your writing from a different point of view. The readers can help you see what your missing and what you might need help on. Peers' comments can help ones writing to become better . Your peers' comments is just constructive criticism, and everyone needs constructive criticism to help their writing improve. For example when my English teacher would make us write essays and when i would get them back she wrote comments and asked questions on a certain topic that i left out information on. So then she would let us re-write them and when i would take mine home to re-write i would revise it and add information that was missing. I would even change some things to make my paper sound better. When i turned in my revised paper i would get a better grade. So see peer response works for anyone to better their writing.
